About 20% of the island is protected by Arikok Park. Here you will find some of Aruba’s most impressive, unique scenic attractions including caves, lava rock formations, and its famous natural pool. The park is home to some unique flora and fauna as well as some striking birds, wild goats, reptiles, and other wildlife. If you are an admirer of natural splendor, Arikok is definitely worth a visit.
We spent the better part of a day on a private guided hike through Arikok. Most cruise ships and tour operators offer excursions to the natural pool. Tourist showed up in masses in ATV’s and jeeps at the pool as we arrived on our hike with our guide Rambo. Most people lined up, balance themselves precariously on the slippery rocks as they made their way to the pool. They spent a few minutes in this magnificent natural phenomenon and left. This was the only area of the park that we encountered other people. If you don’t have time or are not able to do the moderately difficult hike, find time to visit the natural pool.
We suggest hiking with a guide to the natural pool. We enjoyed our packed lunch when we arrived at our destination after our 2 ½ hour trek. From there, we had the option of taking a jeep back to the visitor’s center. If you are ambitious as we were, the hike back along the rugged shoreline offers amazingly stunning vistas with natural guizers and water sprays. Park entrance is $11/person. You can book a guide for free to hike to any point in the park. Our guide, Rambo (he definitely lives up to his name) was quite a character. He told us many tales of his colorful life and as a tour guide on Aruba. I recommend this moderately difficult hike if you are able and inclined to do so as there are many incredible natural wonders that we would have never found on our own. Appropriate shoes for hiking, plenty of water and a good quality sunscreen are a must.

Finding Our Way in Arikok
The Arikok National Park provides a wonderful variety of flora and fauna in an environment best described as an ocean-side desert. Hiking the park, swimming in the natural pool, long hikes through the desert terrain, experiencing the waves crashing into the rocky shores, or lounging on the beaches – there is something for all nature lovers. A visit is well worth your time and highly recommended while you’re on the island.
